Public Meeting a Huge Success

Well over 200 concerned local residents packed out the Birchencliffe Cricket Club for the Save Grimescar Valley public meeting on 23rd July 2014

The venue wasn't able to hold all the residents who turned out for the event. Many stood ouside the main room and listened through open windows.

After welcoming the assembled throng, John Gilbert, the Chair of Save Grimescar Valley Action Group, gave a presentation on the successful battle in 2011 to stop development plans by Thornhill Estates.

John then gave an overview of Thornhill's new Huddersfield Gateway masterplan, and the imminent outline planning application for 200 homes.

Committee member Simon Robinson then gave his perspective on the democratic deficit in the issue facing Grimescar Valley. Simon also highlighted that the developers lacked even the most basic understanding of sustainable development.

The meeting was then thrown open to tattendees to contribute. A long Q&A session which highlighted the depth of local knowledge, serious concerns about the development proposed, and ideas for the campaign.

Lots of people came forward to volunteer to do traffic counts, distribute leaflets and posters etc.

There was also a g
reat speech from Jason McCartney MP supporting efforts to Save Grimescar Valley (see below).

The evening was also a fantastic start to the 'High Five for Grimescar Valley' fundraising campaign.
